Welcome to the Department of Statistics
History of the Department
The Department of Statistics of this institute came into existence in the year 1960 under the leadership of Shri. Mohile, the then head of the statistics department. At that time only undergraduate courses were taught.
During the tenure of Shri. V. G. Bhamburkar as head of the department, postgraduate course was introduced in the academic year 1982-83. Shri. V.G. Bhamburkar’s persistent persuasion yielded permission of opening of the Computer Department in 1990-91 which was jointly run along with the Statistics Department where the responsibility of teaching was solely shouldered by the faculties of Statistics Department.
For a long period of two decades, the department was well known by the name “Department of Statistics and Computer Science”. In the month of November 2005, the department organizsed a national level conference in collaboration with the Society of Statistics, Computer and Applications entitled, “8th Conference of Society of Statistics, Computer and Applications”. The convener of this conference was the head of the department of statistics and computer science Dr. R. G. Kedia.
In due course, the Govt. of Maharashtra appointed an assistant professor for the subject of computer science, one of which was posted to Amravati resulting in the separation of the Statistics, and Computer science departments in 2011.
The department organized workshops for the students and guest lectures which benefited the students. In the last six years, 17 students of PG standsin the merit list in the SGBAU PG examination.
One minor research project sponsored by U.G.C. has so far been completed by Dr. S. R. Kolhekar, faculty of this department. Dr. M. K. Mathankar and Dr. N. W. Andure (Yawale) currently working in the department have also completed minor research projects approved by Mumbai University and U.G.C. resp.
Courses Offered at Various Levels
The department offers UG, PG courses in Statistics. The department of statistics also runs M.Phil. Ph. D. courses.
Highlight of Department
- In the department, there are 5 faculties, one professor and four associate professors, and fourteen Clock Hour Basis teachers.
- 17 students of the department appeared in the merit list of SGBA University examination of M.Sc. Statistics in the last 6 years.
- After autonomous status was given to the institute, the department has framed UG and PG syllabus according to the guidelines of UGC in such a way that students can compete in various competitive examinations and get familiar with different statistical software.
- Formation of statistical society is done every year in which students are office bearers so that they can arrange different activities related to their syllabus as well as guidance for competitive examination and research.
- The department has a recognized research Laboratory and students working for Ph.D.
- Students of M.Sc.in their last year .conduct projects ,in current and real life data which are useful to the society.
- Best practices like cleanliness programme on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, Women day on 8 March,teacher’s day on 5 september celebrated every year in the department.
Infrastructure Facilities and Laboratories
- The department has a very rich library containing 780 books.
- The department has 18 computers, 06 laptops, 14 Printers, 03 LCDs, 136 calculators, 01 T.V., 03 OHP, and 01 smartboard.

Achievements
Up till now, the department has produced 09 Ph.D. , 03 students SET qualified and 17 merit students in PG examination in SGBAU. Many students from the department get jobs in different administrative offices as a statistician in state government offices.
Results
- 100% result of M.Sc. Statistics and overall 96% result of B.Sc.
Co-curricular and Exta-curricular
- Every year the department celebrates National Statistics Day on 29 June.
- Workshops, quiz competitions are organized every year in the department.
