Welcome to the Department of Marathi
Vidarbh region has got a varied tradition of naturally beauty and geographical- historical marks. In this region , great Mahanubhav Saints shri Chrakradhara , Shri Govindprabhu have made a significant work in Medieval Marathi literature & culture. After then in modern age Saint Gulabrao Maharaj , Saint Gadgebaba, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj , Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh And so on has also made significant work in this area for the renaissance and enlightenment of common , subaltern people.
In this varied and rich area The King Edward College was established in 1922- 23 at Amravati . In this college campus Marathi Department was started from academic year 1933-34. And Pro. Dr. V. B. Kolte taught Marathi language & literature in this department for a one and half decade. He was well-known researcher, author in Maharashtra. He became Vice chancellor of Nagpur University. After him Prof. S. N. Banahatti, Prof. B.S. Pandit, Dr. N. G. Deshmukh, Dr. M .G. Natu, Prof. R.G. Jadhao, Dr. G. M. Pawar, Dr. V. A. Dahake, Dr. Prabha Ganorkar, Dr. Vijaya Dabir, Dr. Sushila Patil, Dr. Ramesh Andhare, Prof. M. N. Sarpatwar and many more, who proved themselves in the field of Marathi Literature , significantly contributed to the academics of the department.All these faculties created literary-cultural atmosphere in the campus, as well in the premises of this region. Later many renowned Marathi writers came to their identify. Vishram Bedekar, Suresh Bhatt, Madhukar Keche, Vidyadhar Gokhale, R. G. Chaure, Subhash Khandare, Shankar Raut, Ashok Rana, Ashok Thorat, Satteshwar More, Mona chimote, Vimal Bhalerao, Vasant shende and so on are the names to be mentioned in this concern.
The department has the long and continuous tradition of university meritorious studnts. Many students claimed the Gold medals. More than forty students have qualified NET/SET Examination. Many students have been awarded M. Phil/ Ph.D. degrees and many more are pursuing the research for Ph.D.
In the department, continuously literary-cultural programmes have been organised. Poetry writing workshop, NET / SET workshop, meet the author programme, standard Marathi writing campaign, extended Guest Lectures series, Marathi Literary Society, Group Discussion, Book Katta etc programmes have been organised to enhance the literary taste and sensibility.
The study from undergraduate to Post graduate and research facility for Ph.D. is available in the department.
