Welcome to the Department of Geography
Department of Geography at Government Institute of Science and Humanities, Amravati was established in 1948. Geography department is the second oldest in Vidharbha region and has completed 73 years in UG level teaching and 64 years in PG level teaching. In the last century geography department grow to become one of the largest in the state of Maharashtra and largest in the Vidarbha region. Department has marked its presence in Academia in Maharashtra and India. Till date Alumni from the department have become lecturers and head of department in Maharashtra especially in vidarbha region, helping to grow the subject. Department has also produced many renowned scholars that are working in different fields of the society. The well-known geographer Prof. B.K. Bidwai was the first head of the department. Prof. B.K. Bidwai, Prof. B.G. Tamaskar, Prof. Sintanshu Mukerjee, Dr. S.S. Padhye, Dr. B.C. Changole continued the expansion and development of the department. he department, right from its inception has given high priority for teaching and research. The faculty is actively engaged in cutting edge research in the frontier areas of Human and Physical Geography. The department is well equipped with research facility and library resources. Till date 32 candidates have been awarded Ph.D. degree, and 75 students received M.Phil. Degree from the department. Also 35 students from the department have cleared SET/NET examination.

Highlight of Department
- Department aims to provide fundamental and advanced knowledge of Physical and Human Geography amongst the students at UG and PG level.
- Apart from classroom teaching, the department has long tradition of carrying out village survey and socioeconomic survey of villages located in Vidarbha region as a compulsory task of field work supported by surveying instruments.
- Each year department organizes educational excursion to different topological regions and tourist destinations throughout the nation.
- Geographical society is constituted for overall personality development of U.G. and P.G. students and undertakes extracurricular activities and academic activities.
- Every faculty of the department provides scholastic counselling to the students for clearing NET/SET exams, further research (Ph.D. writing scholarly articles) and motivating for higher studies in renowned educational institutes.
- The department has its own museum, which contains very rare equipment, instruments, rocks and mineral samples, 3D Models, Maps etc
Infrastructure Facilities
- The department has 03 classrooms with 01 laboratory for undergraduate courses and 02 class rooms with 02 laboratories for post graduate courses.
- Department has separate common room for students, cabin for Head, and a staffroom.
- Department has well-furnished computer laboratory for undergraduate, postgraduate students and research scholars.
- The department has its own library containing 3700 text and reference books, 2275 volumes of various Journals.
- To carry out surveying and mapping, which is important component of geography curriculum, department has number of plain tables, Theodolites, Prismatic compass, Global positioning, Total station etc. Students are trained to handle the above instruments.
- The department is provided with 100MBPS Optic Fiber High Speed Internet Connection with Wi-Fi facility.
- Department has one of the oldest, large and best collection of SOI topographical maps and aerial photographs, which are used for teaching and research.
Research (Project and Patent)
- Till date, the department has received 05 sponsored research projects from UGC, ICSSR with funding amounting to Rs. 10 lakh.
Collaborations
- Department has collaboration with IIRS (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing Dehradun). Students can participate in online courses conducted by IIRS.
- In future our department is planning to have collaboration with Soil Department Regional office, Amravati (Govt. of Maharashtra) and Horticulture College, Amravati for the guidance of Soil testing course.
- Department has a very long history of research work. The well-known faculty of the department Dr. Suresh Padhye completed his Ph.D. in the year of 1963 and achieved the distinction of being first Ph.D. in geography in the state of Maharashtra.
- From this department total 32 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree, and 75 students received M.Phil. Degree.
- Total 35 students from the department have cleared SET/NET examination.
- After the completion of post-graduation from the department students have an experience of handling different surveying instruments, which is the basics of surveying and mapping.
- Till date Alumni from the department have become lecturers and head of department in Maharashtra especially in vidarbha region, helping to grow the subject.
- Department has also produced many renowned scholars that are working in different fields of the society.
